Your Opening Chapter Should Be a Gate, Not a Greeting

One of the most common questions I get from new writers is some form of: “How do I write a strong first chapter?”

Beneath the question lies a deeper anxiety. These authors sense that their books’ opening pages carry enormous import. They know readers sample books before buying; yet their attention spans are short. One misstep can cost a sale.

So authors tend to throw themselves into rewrites, second-guessing every paragraph until the story’s beginning feels like a gold filigreed invitation to read the rest of the book. But the first chapter is not a greeting. On the contrary, It is a gate.

And a gate exists to control entry. It allows the right people through and keeps the wrong people out.

Your opening pages perform the same function. They tell the reader what kind of tale he is about to enter. The first chapter conveys tone, sets the moral temperature, and introduces theme. If those signals are muddy, the reader will hesitate. If they’re clear, he steps forward with confidence.
