Why Most Redemption Arcs Fail

Modern storytelling suffers from a strange contradiction.

Audiences consistently praise redemption arcs. Some of fiction’s most beloved characters earned their place in the zeitgeist through moral transformation. Yet many contemporary redemption stories leave readers cold. Instead of satisfaction, they provoke skepticism; in place of catharsis, they arouse frustration.

The problem is seldom the concept itself. As with 99 percent of literary flaws, the issue is in the execution.

Many authors treat redemption as a destination. Great storytellers understand it as a process. Readers will accept almost any transformation provided the journey leading there feels believable. Conversely, even a minor change can come off as absurd if you haven’t laid the groundwork.
